V. Velten holds the BEE (1982), BS Math (1982), and MS in Applied Mathematical Systems (1987) all from the University of Dayton, Dayton Ohio where he is currently enrolled in the EE Ph.D. program. He has been with the Air Force Research Laboratory since 1982. He has been active in Automatic Target Recognizer (ATR) development and evaluation since 1983, and is a past chairperson of the Automatic Target Recognition Working Group (ATRWG) Evaluation committee and is the current Government chairperson of the ATRWG Technology committee. Mr. Velten is currently the technical advisor for the target recognition technology branch, AFRL sensors directorate.
Under support from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), Mr. Velten is currently engaged in research into the application of Algebraic Invariance Theory to Infra-Red (IR) imaging or Thermophysical Invariance, the development of heat transfer models for application to IR Model-Based Vision, and the development of geometric invariants for synthetic aperature radar (SAR) and Electro-optic (EO) sensors. Mr. Velten was the technical lead for the Image Exploitation/ATR (IMEX/ATR) project of the DARPA Image Understanding Program. His past research has included work on the development of the theory of ATR performance evaluation and ATR mission performance modelling.

VV is an avid sports fan with a weakness for NY teams, and has been known to indulge in all manner of tabletop games. He is also notorious for playing Strat-O-Matic (SOM) baseball, and has actually been known to spend weekends at SOM tournaments of which he has 'managed' to win two in 1994, one in 1995, one in 1996, one in 1998, and one in 1999.
